Microsoft's CAPTCHA busted by spammers—again and again

Spammers have once again ramped up the siege on Microsoft's Live Hotmail services, by busting Microsoft's latest, redesigned CAPTCHA system. Near the end of 2008, Microsoft reworked its CAPTCHA authentication, attempting to prevent further automatic registrations by computer programs and automated bots, and preserve CAPTCHA's usability and reliability. As the latest attack shows, those efforts have failed.

The spammers' attack strategy includes more than registering email accounts using anti-CAPTCHA operations; sending mass emails over the Internet; infecting thousands of user machines; and stealing information. Their strategy also includes developing a successful business model that focuses on advertising products and services, and reaching users with increasing success rates. Thus, spammers have been relying on the trusted reputation of Microsoft to carry out a wide range of attacks over the Internet.

Spammers have increased the sophistication of their anti-CAPTCHA response with this latest attack. Previous anti-CAPTCHA operations consistently used automation (sign-up, CAPTCHA break, and account creation) that consisted of straightforward, templated command and control instructions. The latest attack uses automation with encrypted communication between spammer bot servers and compromised machines.

Are Spartans a threat to your online security?

F-Secure announced results from its annual Online Wellbeing Survey. This third-party survey of Internet users aged 20-40 in the United States, Canada, UK, France, Germany—and for the first time—Italy, India and Hong Kong, tested the respondents’ knowledge of online security issues (their ‘security IQ’).

The majority of respondents across the countries—92%—said they have security software installed on their computers. At the same time only 21% of all the respondents knew that antivirus definitions need to be updated many times a day. This indicates that a large population of users may have a false sense of security if their security software is expired or does not update automatically often enough. However, 67% were also aware that they need more than antivirus to keep them safe and almost 90% knew that they can get infected by visiting a malicious website, even if they don’t download anything.

Respondents in India and Hong Kong relied on the security software they had purchased or the security service from their Internet Service Provider (70% India, 50% Hong Kong). Those surveyed in the US had the least confidence in purchased software but rather relied on secure websites. In France, respondents relied more on the security of their online shopping and banking websites than their software.

F-Secure’s Online Wellbeing survey showed that only 17% of respondents were absolutely sure that they had the latest patches and updates. 40% of respondents were less sure but agreed with the statement. Canadians were the most sure (22%) that their applications were patched, with Germans coming in second (21%).

Swisscom and Subex partner to improve fraud protection

Subex Limited announced that it has entered a partnership with Swisscom, Switzerland’s leading telecommunications provider, to co-operate in the field of fraud management. The goal of the partnership is to improve the next generation fraud management. Core of the co-operation is Subex’ Nikira Fraud Management System which serves as the basis to develop and validate detection and mitigation of current and, most importantly, new fraud risks. Nikira is part of Subex’s integrated suite of revenue maximization applications, forming the Revenue Operations Center (ROC) and will be deployed to detect fraud across its current and next generation fixed and mobile networks.

With the current and expected changes in market dynamics and the deployment of its next generation network, Swisscom realized that revenue protection would become an even more complex issue as new fraud patterns are expected to emerge. Therefore Swisscom’s risk management department acted accordingly and used the opportunity of its organizational merger between the Fixline and the Mobile business to replace legacy fraud management by a converged real-time fraud management solution that can face future threads and further helps to leverage the synergies from the combined organization. The fraud management component of Subex’s ROC—Nikira was the natural choice as it provided best breed functionality from an experienced and innovative vendor with the most installations from the industry.
